Tough Opening Stage Tests Monster Energy Honda HRC as Dakar Rally Gets Underway

4th Jan 2026: – Stage one of the Dakar Rally delivered an immediate challenge for the Monster Energy Honda HRC riders, with recent rainfall transforming the 305 km special stage into a demanding mix of fast sandy canyons, technical rocky tracks and a punishing dune finish. Starting from Yanbu, the field faced a long day that required precision, adaptability and focus from start to finish.

In RallyGP, Ricky Brabec led the Honda effort with a controlled ride to third place, while Tosha Schareina backed up a strong performance with fourth despite challenging conditions. Adrien Van Beveren overcame an early front brake issue to finish eighth, and Skyler Howes showed resilience after a crash to reach the finish in ninth.

Rally2 contender Martim Ventura impressed throughout the stage, running among the fastest and holding a strong advantage deep into the route before narrowly missing out on victory to finish second. Teammate Preston Campbell completed his first full Dakar stage with a solid seventh place, gaining valuable experience and momentum.

With stage one complete, the Dakar Rally now heads north toward AlUla, where a long and mountainous route promises another tough test as the event continues.
